A Child-Centred Approach to Development and Peace through Sport
Jun 08, 2025April 6 marks the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, a global recognition of sport as a tool for fostering inclusion, equality, and social transformation. As we celebrate this day, it is essential to highlight initiatives that align with these values—one of which is Montessori Sports. Rooted in the Montessori philosophy, Montessori Sports redefines youth sports by placing children’s holistic development at the centre. This approach not only cultivates athletic ability but also nurtures life skills such as autonomy, collaboration, and resilience, contributing to both personal and societal well-being.
The role of sport in development and peace
Sport has long been recognized as a means to bridge divides, empower communities, and instil values of fair play and respect. The UN emphasizes sport’s role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as education, gender equality, and health. However, traditional sports systems often prioritize competition over development, leaving many children disengaged or excluded. Montessori Sports offers an alternative—an inclusive, child-cantered model that leverages sport as a medium for growth and peacebuilding.
The Montessori approach to sports
Montessori education is known for self-directed learning, prepared environments, and respect for individual development. When applied to sports, these principles create a framework where children are not just participants but active agents in their growth. The Montessori Sports approach focuses on:
- Autonomy: Children explore sports at their own pace, fostering intrinsic motivation and a lifelong love for physical activity.
- Inclusivity: Every child, regardless of ability or background, has the opportunity to participate and thrive in sports.
- Holistic Development: Beyond physical skills, Montessori Sports nurtures cognitive, social, and emotional growth, reinforcing values like empathy, teamwork, and responsibility.
- Peaceful Competition: Instead of a win-at-all-costs mentality, Montessori Sports promotes healthy competition based on self-improvement and collaboration.
In Montessori Sports, winning means overcoming an obstacle as an individual or as a team. We focus on creating strategies to achieve an outcome, knowing that if the process is well-executed, the outcome will take care of itself. Playing matches provides valuable feedback on this process—similar to the Montessori concept of control of error.
By applying Montessori’s principles, sports become a playful way for children to develop essential life skills such as:
- Managing emotions
- Collaborating and competing with others
- Challenging stereotypes
- Overcoming different types of obstacles
- Staying true to their values under pressure
This approach transforms sports into a powerful tool for personal growth and social development—a true win-win for everyone involved.
Montessori sports and the UN’s goals for sport and development
The UN’s vision for sport as a driver of development aligns with Montessori Sports in multiple ways:
- Quality Education (SDG 4): By integrating sports into the Montessori educational framework, children engage in movement-based learning that enhances concentration, problem-solving, and discipline. The Montessori Sports Fundamentals Course, accredited by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), equips educators and coaches to implement this method in schools worldwide.
- Health and Well-Being (SDG 3): A child-centred approach ensures that sports participation contributes to both physical and mental health. Montessori Sports emphasises the joy of movement rather than external pressures, encouraging lifelong physical activity habits.
- Gender Equality (SDG 5): The Montessori Sports model fosters gender-inclusive environments where boys and girls play together, challenging stereotypes and promoting equal opportunities in sports.
- Peace and Strong Institutions (SDG 16): By focusing on collaboration, respect, and mutual understanding, Montessori Sports helps children develop essential social skills that contribute to peaceful communities.
A concrete example: sport as a bridge for peace
One of the most compelling examples of sport fostering peace is the case of the Ivory Coast during the country’s civil war in the early 2000s. In 2005, the national football team, led by Didier Drogba, used their qualification for the FIFA World Cup as a platform to call for unity in the war-torn nation. Their plea for peace led to a temporary ceasefire and opened the door for reconciliation efforts. This moment showcased how sport, when used effectively, can transcend political and social divides to unite people under a common cause.
Similarly, Montessori Sports encourages children from diverse backgrounds to collaborate, share, and respect one another—reinforcing the idea that sports can be a unifying force for peace and development.
The future of sports for development and peace
As we celebrate the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we must reflect on how we can make sports more accessible, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate for children worldwide. Montessori Sports provides a blueprint for achieving this goal by championing a model that places children’s well-being at its core.
Governments, schools, and sports organisations must recognise the value of child-centred sports methodologies. Investing in educator training, developing Montessori-inspired sports programs, and creating policies that prioritise holistic development over mere athletic success will be key to ensuring that sport truly serves as a force for good.
April 6 is a reminder that sport is more than just a game—it is a powerful instrument for shaping the future. Montessori Sports stands as a testament to how a thoughtful, child-centred approach to sports can drive meaningful change, fostering a generation of empowered, resilient, and compassionate individuals. Let us continue to support and expand initiatives that align with this vision, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of sports.
