Why This Program?

Often, you see a disconnect between the principles and values of Montessori education and the way physical education, sports, and games are approached within the school environment. PE teachers often lack a Montessori foundation and there is a limited connection to cosmic education within the indoor environment. As a result, PE, sports and games are often viewed as something separate, which does not align with the holistic Montessori vision.

Maria Montessori reminds us that sports and movement are not just exercise, but a natural way for children to express and release their energy:

“What should our attitude be towards ordinary gymnastics and games in the open air? They are a means of using up excessive energy, that is, energy not yet expended. There should be a carefree use of the forces which the daily order of work has not used up. This is something quite different from looking upon games and gymnastics in themselves as merely a means of physical exercise, as a kind of reaction to the dangers of inertia.”

— Maria Montessori, The Discovery of the Child, p. 97

That’s why this program connects Montessori education with sports: to support the child’s natural development through movement, joy, and purposeful activity.

What Our Schools Say...

"In my current role as Movement & Sports Coordinator, I have witnessed a significant shift in how the children respond and engage in what I prepare as I implement more and more of what I learned. I am excited about being a part of the MS Coordinators group. I can imagine us collectively creating more clarity for how to develop this position for more Montessori schools across the world."

Kelly Jarrell (AMI 6 -12 trained)
Movement & Sports Coordinator
Austin Montessori School

"We've seen our students grow not only in athletic skills but also in confidence, cooperation, and joy for movement. Our Sports coordinator - who is trained and supported by Montessori Sports - nurtures these qualities in a caring and respectful way, truly honouring and supporting the spirit of each individual child."

Liz Bovey
Director
Westside Montessori School

"What we believe is key in the course is the deep connection with the Montessori principles and how they were addressed from a sports perspective. Additionally, after taking the course, we had the opportunity to work continuously with Montessori Sports Trainers on implementing practices at Noordwijk Montessori School."
