"At our public Montessori school, movement, sports, and physical activities are an integral part of the daily routine!"

Eduard-Dietrich-Schule is a public school with 300 children and approximately 50 educators, located in Ratingen, Germany. As a public Montessori school, the school integrates movement, sports, and physical activities into the daily routine. The state guidelines stipulate three hours of physical education per week.

Children at Eduard-Dietrich-Schule are free to participate in Montessori sports activities every day. These activities include exercises that improve coordination, fitness, and motor skills. The school offers a variety of exercise sessions in different locations: in the gym, in the schoolyard, at the swimming pool, the ice rink, and the sports field. In addition, the school regularly organizes trips into nature and cycling activities.

A team of four qualified physical education teachers and three sports-certified educators supports both structured and free movement learning. Throughout the school, shelves with materials and clear exercise instructions enable children to independently explore movement during free work time. These include a wide range of exercises with ropes, balls, hoops, foot or posture exercises, endurance, and coordination tasks. The children are introduced to these activities in the same structured way they learn academic subjects such as math and German.

Through this holistic approach, Eduard-Dietrich-Schule fosters not only physical development but also independence, executive functions, and a lifelong love of movement. The school is proud to contribute to the Montessori Sports School Mentoring Program and to share its experience with other schools!
